This matters because expressions of scholarship are becoming more diverse. Articles are increasingly joined by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The sharing of \u201craw science\u201d like datasets, code, and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Design of experiments\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Design_of_experiments\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">experimental designs<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Semantic publishing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantic_publishing\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Semantic publishing<\/a> or \u201cnanopublication,\u201d where the citeable unit is an argument or passage rather than entire article.<\/li>\n<li>Widespread self-publishing via blogging, microblogging, and comments or annotations on existing work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because alt-metrics are themselves diverse, they\u2019re great for measuring impact in this diverse scholarly ecosystem. In fact, alt-metrics will be essential to sift these new forms, since they\u2019re outside the scope of traditional filters.
